 MEMRI3 FAQs

What is MEMRI3?

MEMRI3 is flexible tabulation program offered by MRI that is designed for working with media research data. In addition to MRI data, MEMRI3 can be used to tabulate syndicated media research from Mendelsohn Media Research, Intelliquest, J.D. Power, Erdos & Morgan, MARS, Teenage Research Unlimited, and many other data providers. MEMRI3 is in wide use by advertising agencies, magazine sales departments, broadcast media sales departments and advertisers.

How do I find out which version and build of MEMRI3 I’m using now?

When you enter the MEMRI3 application, the version and build are on the top left hand side of the Main Menu screen.

Is there somewhere I can get a full list of MEMRI English-Language Synonyms?

MRI creates a full list of MEMRI English-Language Synonyms for each study. An index of these lists is available by selecting View from the toolbar and then Display Synonyms/Media Codes.

Under some MRI categories, I see information on “amount spent.” Is there a way in MEMRI3 to code for the total expenditure within a category that has spending information?

The codes that MRI publishes allow isolation of specific spending ranges. By multiplying the number of people in each range by the midpoint of that range (usually calculated by averaging the endpoints of the range), then adding together the results, it is possible to arrive at a reasonable estimate of total spending within the category. In MEMRI3, this is done using a SUMAX function; other tabulation systems have similar functions for performing this operation.

When is it appropriate to use the SUMAX function in MEMRI3?

The SUMAX function calculates a “weighted gross total,” which consists of performing several multiplication operations, then adding together the results. Its most common usage is to convert information organized in a frequency distribution format (number of people at given levels of product usage or spending) into a total amount. Its most common application is the conversion of “amount spent” information in a category into total category spending. Other appropriate applications are anywhere that product usage levels are available, but no volumetric code exists, particularly in non-standard product categories.

How do I code a SUMAX function in MEMRI3?

To code a SUMAX function in MEMRI3, first code each of the levels of spending or product usage into separate cells, then highlight the whole range of cells and right-click on them. From the menu that appears, choose “Combine Selected Rows/Columns,” then select “Weighted Gross Total (SUMAX)” from the list of choices in the Combine Selected Cells box and click the “OK” button. An 'Assign Values to People' box will then appear, in which each of the ranges will have their own corresponding value. Memri provides these values automatically in most cases. Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the screen, and the Weighted Gross Total (SUMAX) will appear in the spreadsheet.

What is an N-Tile? When should I use N-Tiles?

The N-Tile system allows MEMRI3 users to rank and divide respondents based on any criteria they like. The name, “N-Tile” refers to the flexibility of defining the number of breaks – if you wanted to define N=3, you would get heavy-medium-light terciles, N=5 would create quintiles, N=10 would create deciles, etc. Popular applications of N-Tiles include creating HML groups based on usage of specific brands (say, Budweiser) or combined usage of groups of brands (total volume of Budweiser, Bud Light and Bud Ice). Another possibility might be to select a number of different leisure activities, and then rank and divide the respondents based on the number of those activities they participate in… the possibilities are infinite.

How do I ‘not’ (negate) a code in MEMRI3?

There are two ways of negating a code. To manually negate the code, double click on the cell and in the definition box, add a ~ sign before the card column punch (e.g. ~9611y). The other option is to highlight the cell, right click, select Combine Selected Rows/Columns and from the Combine Selected Cells menu, check off "Anyone who isn't in the combined group". The "not-ed" statement will then appear as a separate cell in the spreadsheet.

What’s the difference between the Matrix View and the Zoom View in MEMRI3?

The “matrix view” is designed as a “birds-eye” view of data – it gives rows and columns equal emphasis by stacking the variables in each cell. This view is very useful for coding, browsing and printing the data, but not as useful for sorting or exporting. The “zoom view” flattens the data by placing each variable into its own column, effectively widening each cell so that more rows (but fewer columns) can be viewed on the screen. This view is excellent for exporting and sorting the data, but not as practical for browsing or printing. Coding can only be done in the "matrix view".

How do I sort on a specific variable in the MEMRI3 Matrix View?

To sort in the Matrix View, simply highlight the target you want to sort, Right Click and select either "Sort Rows from High to Low" or "Sort Rows from Low to High". From there, select the variable to be sorted (unwgted, weighted, horz%, vert%, index) and MEMRI3 will sort all rows based on that criteria. Keep in mind however, that only one column can be sorted at a time in the Matrix View. To sort multiple targets at once, use the Zoom View.

How do I sort on a specific variable in the MEMRI3 Zoom View?

In zoom view, each variable has its own column. To sort on a specific variable, place the cursor in the yellow or colored cell of the variable to be sorted, right click and select "Sort High > Low" or "Sort Low > High." The target will automatically be sorted. If you are in “collapsed zoom view,” each column will sort independently on that variable; if you are in “wide zoom view,” then all rows will sort according to the one you’ve highlighted. (Note: To sort multiple targets at once, use Collasped Zoom View).

How do I filter using Golddigger?

The Golddigger filteration system can be used in both the Matrix View as well as the Zoom View. To set golddigger in the Matrix View, select Format from the toolbar, and in the drop down list, click on Golddigger Filters. In the Golddigger wizard that appears next, highlight the variable to be filtered in the Select Variables list, and then check off "Show Rows That". From here, select either "Are" or "Are Not" depending on what the desired filter is and then fill in the blank box next to it with the numeric range. (You can fill in an actual range i.e. 110-150 or an infinite range, 120+). The criterion will then be listed towards the bottom of the wizard, under Current Golddigger Critera. To select multiple criteria at once, redo the steps above, selecting another variable from the list. After all criteria is entered in, check off Enable Golddigger Filter, and select OK. In the Matrix View, all rows that don't meet the golddigger criteria will be greyed out. In Zoom View the golddigger system operates in the same manner except, all rows not meeting criteria will be hidden.

In MEMRI3, I don’t see the option to pull up some MRI variables, such as “average minutes read,” “average days read,” “average page exposure,” “magazine rating,” and interest in advertising.” Where can I find this information in MEMRI3?

These variables are only available in CostRank. You can add them to the spreadsheet by clicking on the Variables button in the toolbar, and then selecting the Qualitative Audience Variables tab. Highlight the desired variable and select Insert. You can look at the variable as either a qualitative audience, a percent of the average issue audience, or rank/percent diff. Once the variable is selected, hit OK and it will appear in the spreadsheet.

How do I run a basic reach/frequency analysis in MEMRI3?

The Reach/Frequency application within MEMRI3 can be reached only through the Cost Rank program. To enter R/F, first select a study, and then click on the “Cost Ranker/R&F/Cume+” option at the Main Menu screen. In Cost Rank, put all the media you plan to include in the analysis into the rows, and then put your target in as a column. Highlight the target, and then click once on the “R & F” button just above the spreadsheet to enter the Reach/Frequency application. Once there, you’ll see a series of numbered columns with shaded cells; each column is meant to be a separate schedule. Just type in insertions manually, or click the “Optimize” button to determine the most efficient schedules. (Note: the costs default to the latest rate card information from MRI+. To override the costs, change the “unit” to “user” and type them in.)

How do I build a count code in MEMRI3?

To build a count statement, first code out each component/behavior to be included in the statement, in separate cells of the spreadsheet. Then highlight those cells, right click, and select Combined Selected Rows/Columns from the menu. In the Combine Select Cells screen, click on People who are in _ of these (N, N-N, N+) and in the blank box, fill in the criteria you want to build the count (either as a range, single number or infinite range). Click OK and the count statement will appear in the Crosstab.

How do I take a report I created in one study and bring it into another study?

Most codes in MRI can be flipped from one study to another. To change a report to another study, have the report opened in the oringinal study it was created in. Then select Data from the toolbar, select Change Study/Weighting, and from the database list, select the study you want to import your file into. Click OK and the entire report will then show up in the new study. (Note: Volumetric codes cannot be flipped from one study to another).

How do I export my report to excel?

Reports can be exported from both the Matrix View as well as Zoom View, although the Zoom View, which separates each variable into it's own separate column, is more efficient for use in Excel. To export to excel, select File from the toolbar and then Export. Select Microsoft Excel from the list (you can also export to text and pdf). A box will then appear that will ask if you want to export the current base (the default) or other bases in the base list. To just export the current base, click OK, give the file a name, and the file will be saved and opened in excel. To export multiple bases, uncheck Current Base and select all the bases you want to export. Click OK, give your file a name, and when the excel spreadsheet opens up, each separate exported base will have it's own worksheet at the bottom.

How do I save my report in Memri?

Memri files have an extension of .mri. To save a file in Memri, simply select File from the toolbar, click Save As, browse to the directory you want to save to and give the file a name. Please note however, that .mri files can only be opened in Memri.

How do I open a saved run in Memri?

To open a saved run, you can select Open File from the Main Menu screen, or if you are already in a Crosstab, select Open from the toolbar, browse to where the file is saved, and select OK.

What are Recall Defs?

Recall Defs are shortcut files that contain commonly used data points for easy access and effiency. MRI builds a number of files, listed under MRI Pre-Built Definitions. These can be used as shortcuts when running information such as magazines, demos, etc. User built recall defintions can also be created, and will be listed under User Definition Files. Please note however, that Recall Definitions are not a comprehenive list of everything available in MRI, it is simply a shortcut tool.

How do I save my own Recall Definitions?

Code out all the data points you want included in the definition file, into the spreadsheet. Highlight them all and select Save Defs from the toolbar. Browse to the directory you want the file saved in and click Save. This definition file will now be included in the Recall Defs list under User Definition files.

What does a # next to a datapoint mean?

A # sign signifies data that is only released in one wave of the study, not two. In cases like these, you must either scale the datapoint up by 200%, or change the weighting to just the wave the information is released in.

How do I scale an audience?

You can manuelly edit a cell to scale a given code. Double click on the cell and in the definition box, type 'scale' before the code and add an open parenthesis. After the numeric code, add a comma and then the % to scale. Then close the statement with a close parenthesis. The statement should read: e.g.: scale(9611y,200.0)

Where can I find prototypes in the MEMRI3 system?

After a prototype is loaded into MEMRI3, it can be found in Costrank/R&F/Cume+ by double clicking a blank row cell and entering the Insert Media List. To view prototypes in Crosstab, select the Publications tab from the toolbar and scrowl down to User Defined Publications. Select the plus sign to open the list. Each prototype will be listed separately.

How can I build a trend report in MEMRI3?

Select the Trend button from the toolbar, highlight the studies to be trended (including the study you are currently in), select Insert and then OK. In the Matrix View, you can see the Average across the reports by selecting Show Averages in Matrix View. You can also group the variables together by years in Zoom View by selecting that option. To add % difference, click on the Variables tab, highlight which particular variable you want to see % difference for, select Insert As % Difference and then click OK.

How do I change my base in MEMRI3?

To change your base to an MRI pre-built base, just select the universe you want from the base tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet. Selecting a tab automatically converts your report to the selected base. To change the report to a base not included by MRI, doubleclick on row 3 (All) to enter the base list, and from there you can either enter the electronic codebook by selecting Autocode, or if you know the numeric code or English Language Synonym, you can select New and put in the code in the Definition box. Once your new base as been created, it will appear in the base list. Highlight it and click OK. Your report will then be converted to that base.

How can I shorten labels in MEMRI3?

You can shorten the sometimes, quite lengthy, labels by highlighting the cells to be edited, right clicking, and selecting Rebuild Labels. In the Reverse Code/Label Lookup box, each part of the label has been color coded. To take out a particular part of the label, simply un-highlight that color. After clicking ok, each label in the spreadsheet will be automatically edited.

What does the * mean in MEMRI3?

The * denotes unstable data. Anything below 50 respondents is considered unstable and should be used with caution. Memri will mark unstable data in the Matrix View, Zoom view and excel export.

Where can I save files in MEMRI3 Citrix?

When running MEMRI3 via Citrix, you may save files in one of two paths. You may save files on your C:/MRI folder (this is recommended for all excel files) or on the M share drive. The M drive is recommended for all .mri files or def files that you want to share with other users. It is not ideal for excel files however, because Citrix cannot launch any third party applications, such as Microsoft Excel. If you want to share Excel files, it's recommended that you save them locally, and then put them up on your company's share drive.

Where can I access MEMRI3 online?

The website to log on to MEMRI3 is www.infocume.com

How can I delete files from the M drive?

In the Main Menu screen, select the Share button. Browse to where the file is saved, click on it and press the Delete key on your keyboard. This will delete the file.

How can I copy a file from the M drive, to my local C:/MRI folder?

In the Main Menu screen, select the Share button. Browse to where the file(s) is saved, highlight it, and press the MRI button. Select Copy file(s), browse your C:/MRI folder and say OK.

How can I copy files from my C:/MRI folder up to the shared M drive?

In the Main Menu screen, select the Share button. Select the files from your C:/drive to share, and select Open/OK.

After I've exported my run to excel, how can I open it?

Excel cannot automatically launch from Citrix. Save your excel file to your local C:/MRI folder. Launch Excel from your list of programs and open the file from there.

How can I create a new user folder on the M drive?

In the Main Menu screen, click the 'People' button and select New User. Type out the name of the new folder and then click Close. From this screen, you may also delete or rename a folder as well.

Do I have to run updates or maintain the database when running Memri via Citrix?

No, MRI takes care of all data loading and maintainence on Citrix. Users do not have to run any updates.

Is there a limit to the number of concurrent users that can be on MEMRI3 Citrix?

Yes, this depends on your contract. You can contact your sales rep or the Client Services Helpline to determine the number of concurrent users your license allows. If you've exceeded the number of concurrent users, a error message will pop up and it will not allow you into the program until another user logs off.
